The reason all Porter Classic products are made in Japan is simple.

High level craftsmanship.

Our colleagues from the factories to the independent professionals are artisanal blessings, and the constant challenges they overcome defy quality in each of our products.

Here’s an open letter we sent to the artisans, asking them about their work ethics,their creative surroundings and their economic views that forms Porter Classic.

Please share with us what kind of environment, or work state, Porter Classic’s leather goods / leather carving / silver buttons are created in.

“A place with a workbench” 

The workbench carries my conviction and I devote everything to this space.

This is where it’s born.

- なぜ「革小物・カーヴィング・シルバーボタン道」に惹かれたのですか？　その道の魅力を教えてください。

What attracted you to this craft? What was(is) the appeal?

・衝動

自分のモノ造りは心の衝動から始まり

素材を限定せず、飾るモノではなく使えるモノを

全て自分の手で造りたいです。

“Impulse”

My craft comes from an urge to create.  To create useable things, not things to display. 

I try to create every aspect of the product by my own hands.

- 上手に作られた「革小物・カーヴィング・シルバーボタン」と上手に作られていない「革小物・カーヴィング・シルバーボタン」の違いは何ですか？

（「上手に」を「自由に」「丁寧に」「純粋に」など変更して頂いても大丈夫です）

Tell us the difference between “good” leather goods / leather carving / silver buttons and “bad” leather goods / leather carving / silver buttons.

(Feel free to change “good” to “skilled” “unrestricted” “genuine” etc.)

・涙で造られたモノ、汗で造られたモノの違い

低コスト生産が目的で諸外国で作らせ

インドネシアなどの工場では縫っても縫っても

縫子さん達はご飯も食べれないという記事を読んだことがあります。

涙を流しながら縫われたモノには怨念がこもっていると思っていて

そのようなモノを着たり使ったりした人は幸せになるのでしょうか？

自分は汗を垂らし、良いモノになれよと念じながら造っています。

そのような念を入れたモノはお客様を幸せにできると信じてます。

目には見えないだろうけど、涙モノと汗モノの違いがあると思います。

“Made with tears vs. Made from sweat”

I read articles about the poor labor conditions in places like Indonesia, where some factory workers are being so underpaid they cannot get by.  I think products made in those conditions bear grudges... How can you be happy wearing something that contains a grudge?

I work hard, sweat during production, and try to root this positive energy into all the products while manufacturing them.  I believe that kind of energy translates to customer satisfaction.
