Our colleagues from the factories to the independent professionals are artisanal blessings, and the constant challenges they overcome defy quality in each of our products.

Here’s an open letter we sent to the artisans, asking them about their work ethics,their creative surroundings and their economic views that forms Porter Classic.

- PCの「ジュエリー」を作る現場は、どのような現場ですか？

Please share with us what kind of environment, or work state, Porter Classic jewelry is created in.

ベテラン

金、プラチナ、シルバーと様々な宝石を使いジュエリー＆アクセサリーを制作するジュエリーメ－カ－の制作現場です。私は主に、ジュエリー＆アクセサリーの原型、試作品、製品を作っています。

中堅

私は装身具の中でも主にWAX原型と試作品の制作を担当させて頂いております。社内でもチームによって仕事内容は異なるのですが、PCの装身具を制作させて頂いてるこのチームは仕事には厳しいですが、新しい制作方法やアイディアに対する考え方は柔軟で、色々な意見が飛び交う現場です。

若手

ジュエリーに限らず、ものづくりが大好きな人達が集まっています。職人同士相談し合いながら仕事ができているので、毎日たくさんの刺激をもらっています。時間に追われることや頭を抱えることもありますが、妥協のない商品づくりをみんなで心がけています。

Veteran

Our company specializes in gold, platinum, silver and other precious stones to manufacture jewelries and accessories.  My main operation is creating the patterns, molding the prototypes, and the actual production.

Mainstay

I’m in charge of the patterns and waxing the prototypes.  There are different sections in our company and the team producing Porter Classic ornaments, I’d say we’re a very determined group.  Everyone takes their work seriously, but we’re also very flexible to new ideas and opinions are freely exchanged.

Apprentice

The people gathered here appreciate all forms of creativity, not just jewelries.  There’s a lot of consultation between the artisans, which makes this environment inspiring.  Sometimes because of the schedule we butt heads but we all have an uncompromising attitude to our craft.

- なぜ「ジュエリー道」に惹かれたのですか？　その道の魅力を教えてください。

What attracted you to this craft? What was(is) the appeal?

正直なところ、ジュエリーに特に興味があったわけではありませんが、何かモノを作る職人になりたいという思いがあり、たまたま友人に誘われて入ったのがジュエリーの制作会社でした。

何となく進み始めた道でしたが、物作りの楽しさ、難しさを経験して行くうちにあっという間に32年がたっていました。

中堅

実家のお隣さんが宝飾品を制作する工房で、小さな頃は学校帰りなどに遊びに行っていました。金槌で地金を叩く音がとても心地よかったのを思い出します。また実家が祖父の代が材木商で父の代から建築業を営んでおりますので小さな頃からモノ作りや職人さんと話すのが好きでした。大工さんではなく装身具の道に惹かれたのは『木』よりも『金属と石』に魅力を感じたのと、『自由度』が高い事です。どんな形でも素材でも装身具にする事は可能ですからね。またお風呂に入るときでも、旅行に行くときでも肌見放さず、その人の一部になっていくことが素敵だな♥っと思っています。

若手

ジュエリーは身につける人を輝かせてくれるもの、そして人と人との愛、絆を強めるものです。私はそれを自分の手で生み出し、長く残したいと思いました。

技術に関しては勉強不足なことがたくさんありますが、向き合った分だけ目に見える結果で形になってくれるので、やりがいがあります。お客さまが作品を気に入って身につけてくださっていることを考えると喜びをとても感じます。

Veteran

To be honest, I was never interested in jewelries but interested in becoming an artisan.  By chance a friend of mine invited me to join a jewelry company.  That’s how it started.  Somehow I got into this business, started to experience the joys as well as the difficulties of this craft along the way, and before I knew 32 years have passed since.

Mainstay

There was a jewelry studio next my house and when I was a kid I would hang out there after school.  I liked the sound of the artisans hammering the metal, that was a comforting sound to me.  I enjoyed talking to the artisans and appreciated them since I was a kid.  My grandfather was a lumber merchant and my father was an architect so I was always interested in craftsmanship.  I chose to become a jewelry artisan instead of a carpenter because metal and stone were more appealing to me than wood. I felt more freedom with those materials.  With ornaments, you can shape any material to any shape you want it to be.

It’s rewarding to me how people can take ornaments anywhere, whether it’s travelling or taking a bath, it becomes a part of them, which is cool ❤︎

Apprentice

Jewelries can illuminate people, or strengthen love, strengthen the bond between people.  I wanted to make that with my own hands, something that will stay for a long time.  There’s a lot to learn in terms of the craft, but the more you devote to it, the more skilled you become so it can be rewarding.  It’s always nice to see customers wearing the jewelries I made.

- 上手に作られた「ジュエリー」と上手に作られていない「ジュエリー」の違いは何ですか？

（「上手に」を「自由に」「丁寧に」「純粋に」など変更して頂いても大丈夫です）

Tell us the difference between “good” jewelry and “bad” jewelry.

(Feel free to change “good” to “skilled” “unrestricted” “genuine” etc.)

ベテラン

人の手で作られたモノには、作り手の性格やくせ、またはその時の感情や思いが良くも悪くも出てしまうものだと思っています。技術的に上手い下手は当然ありますが、手にした時に作り手の思い（優しさや楽しさ）が感じられるモノは良い物だと思います。

中堅

曖昧な表現ですが、制作したモノが上手に作れて愛着が湧いて、依頼してくださった、お客様に渡したくないと思う瞬間があるか無いかです。

若手

細部までへのこだわり、気に掛け方だと思います。全体のバランスやデザインの良し悪しはもちろんですが、そういった細かな部分を大事にすることでも違いは大きく出てくると思います。また、見た目だけではなくお客様がつけた際のつけ心地にも気をつけるようにしています。

Veteran

Good or bad, a handmade product reveals the character, the habit, the feelings, the thoughts of the maker.  It’s all there.  Of course there’s skill and the lack of,  but when you can feel the warmth, the positive energy emanating from the jewelry, then that’s a good product. 

Mainstay

This might sound vague... but the moment when the jewelry is really well made and you become so fond of it that you don’t want to send it to your client. 

Apprentice

The overall balance, the design, they’re both important but it’s the attention to detail that makes a huge difference.  Every detail should be treated with care.  

Not just the look of it, but how it feels when you put it on.
