Here’s an open letter we sent to the artisans, asking them about their work ethics,their creative surroundings and their economic views that forms Porter Classic.

 

 

 

- PCの「革靴」を作る現場は、どのような現場ですか？

Please share with us what kind of environment, or work state, Porter Classic leather shoes are created in.

  

決して綺麗なアトリエで製作してるとは言い辛いかもしれません。

作業場では常に最善かつスピード感が必要になります。

薬品の匂いとオイルの臭いが入り交じっているような、なんとも言えない感じです。

もともと整頓されすぎている作業場っていうのはちょっと自分は落ち着かないというのが本音ですが。

I don’t think my atelier is a clean place for production.

The work place constantly requires efficiency and quick access.

The odor of the chemicals and the oil integrating... it’s hard to express.

I personally don’t think that a clean organized work space is suitable.

 

- なぜ「革靴道」に惹かれたのですか？　その道の魅力を教えてください。

What attracted you to this craft? What was(is) the appeal?

 

昔から靴は好きでしたが、正直作りたいほど好きだったという事はありませんでした。昔SHOPをしていた時に単純に仕入れたい靴が無く、だったらという想いでこの道をスタートさせました。

I always liked shoes but not so much that I wanted to make them.

But when I used to run a shop I just couldn’t find the kind of shoes that I wanted to sell, so that’s how this path started.

 

- 上手に作られた「革靴」と上手に作られていない「革靴」の違いは何ですか？

（「上手に」を「自由に」「丁寧に」「純粋に」など変更して頂いても大丈夫です）

Tell us the difference between “good” leather shoes and “bad” leather shoes.

(Feel free to change “good” to “skilled” “unrestricted” “genuine” etc.)

 

大前提に木型の特色、特性をどこまで引き出せているかというのが一点。
靴の場合はあくまでもデザインは最後になってしまうかもしれません。
型紙、素材の引き算が旨くマッチングしているか。
それができていれば多少の事は問題ないように最近は思い始めています。

Basic premise of a good shoe is how the features or the characteristics of its wooden model are realized. The actual designing is the last part.  Also, it’s how the material is extracted from the pattern, and whether that pattern-material combination matches.  If these things correlate, it works out.

 

- 作業しやすい格好はどのような格好ですか？　何故ですか？

What’s a comfortable work wear?

 

動きやすいのはやはりニットですが自分の場合は糊、釘、薬品等を使う事が多いのでクロム鞣しの動きやすい革のエプロンか、デニムですね。

Knit wear is always easy to move in but I use a lot of adhesives, nails, and chemicals, so I wear chromium tanned leather apron, denim.

 

 

- 「革靴づくり」において、ルーティーンやルールなどありますか？

Do you have a routine or a set of rules in your craft?

 

ルーティーンはありませんが。
自分の中のルールはありますが、言葉では表現しにくいですね。

I don’t have routines, I have rules but it’s hard to put it into words.

 

- PCの「革靴」は高いですか？

Are Porter Classic leather shoes expensive?

 

値段はあってないようなモノなので、お客様の価値観が一致すればと思います。

The price is secondary to the customer’s sense of values. 

 

 

- ご自身が好きなPCの表現（商品など）は何ですか？

What expression or product by Porter Classic resonates with you?

 

オリジナルの剣道着でしょうか。ファッションとしては唯一無二の存在で
HUGEのニュースページ見た時は鳥肌がたったのを今でも覚えています。

The original PC KENDO.  There’s nothing like it in the fashion world.  I still remember the first time I saw it in HUGE magazine and how it gave me chills.
